Journey Meals are designed to meet the needs of hungry children of Amelia Elementary and Middle School at times when other resources are not available on weekends. Based on available funding, the program partnership selects the recipients from the pool of eligible children. Then a bag filled with 6-8 pounds of nutritious, kid-friendly food is sent home each Friday. Volunteer Packing Partners fill the meal bags each week.
In Amelia, you’ll find teachers who can tell you about a student who came to school on Monday, not reluctant to start the school week but eager to get back to school after going through Friday evening, all day Saturday, and all day Sunday without a square meal – or knowledge of a source for their next meal.
Those children are the reason we started the Journey Meals Weekend Food Program to ensure that children in need have balanced, nutritious food they need to learn and grow. The concept is simple: children at risk of weekend hunger receive a bag of food that is child-friendly, nutritious, nonperishable, and easy to prepare/eat. Each bag offers enough food that children can easily assemble into six healthy meals over the weekend when schools are unable to provide breakfasts or lunches. The meal bags are distributed to children in need through the school system-discreetly-each Friday afternoon or before a long holiday weekend. The program is staffed by all volunteers. No one working for Journey Meals receives any compensation.
There are multiple ways you can get involved in this weekend food program. You, your family, your church or other organization can sponsor a child for a week, a month, or the whole school year.
Or maybe you want to help by volunteering service hours to pack the meals, or pick up and deliver them.
